20 Key Business Metrics Every Clothing Brand Must Track
Most people start a clothing brand without understanding product creation, sourcing, marketing, pricing, and brand building. This 100-day course is built to help you understand the path before you start working on it.
This course is created from the real experience of building and scaling Offnorth Fashions into a multi-crore clothing brand over the last 6+ years.
Let’s zoom out and look at what numbers you should track to know if your business is actually growing.
Because here’s the truth: If you’re not measuring the right things, you’re not really running a business – you’re just guessing.
Imagine you’re driving at night without a speedometer, fuel gauge, or GPS. You might be moving… but you have no idea if you’re going in the right direction or if you’ll run out of fuel.
Metrics are your business dashboard. They tell you where you are now, where you’re headed and what needs fixing before it’s too late.
Here are 20 Important Metrics for Clothing Brands:
Here’s your starter pack – not too deep, but enough to run your brand like a pro.
1. Revenue
What it is: Total money coming in.
Example: You sold 100 T-shirts at ₹999 each → ₹99,900 revenue.
How to track: Shopify dashboard, accounting software.
2. Cost of Goods Sold (COGS)
What it is: Direct cost to make each product.
Example: Fabric ₹250 + stitching ₹100 + packaging ₹50 → ₹400 COGS per tee.
How to track: Maintain a cost sheet per SKU.
3. Gross Profit Margin
Formula: (Revenue – COGS) ÷ Revenue × 100
Example: (₹999 – ₹400) ÷ ₹999 × 100 = 59.9% margin.
4. Net Profit Margin
What it is: Actual profit after all expenses.
Example: Revenue ₹1,00,000 – all expenses ₹80,000 = ₹20,000 net profit → 20% margin.
5. Average Order Value (AOV)
Formula: Total Revenue ÷ Number of Orders
Example: ₹1,00,000 ÷ 120 orders = ₹833 AOV.
6. Conversion Rate
What it is: % of visitors who buy.
Example: 5,000 visitors, 100 orders → 2% conversion rate.
How to track: Google Analytics, Shopify.
7. Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC)
Formula: Total Marketing Spend ÷ New Customers Acquired
Example: ₹20,000 ads ÷ 50 new customers = ₹400 CAC.
8. Customer Lifetime Value (CLTV)
What it is: How much a customer spends over their lifetime.
Example: If they buy 3 times × ₹999 = ₹2,997 CLTV.
9. Return on Ad Spend (ROAS)
Formula: Revenue from Ads ÷ Cost of Ads
Example: ₹50,000 sales ÷ ₹10,000 ads = 5× ROAS.
10. Cart Abandonment Rate
What it is: % of people who add to cart but don’t buy.
Example: 300 add-to-carts, 150 purchases → 50% abandonment.
11. Repeat Purchase Rate
Formula: Returning Customers ÷ Total Customers × 100
Example: 40 out of 100 customers bought again → 40% repeat rate.
12. Refund & Return Rate
Example: 20 returns out of 500 orders → 4% return rate.
Why track: High returns hurt profit & cash flow.
13. Website Traffic
Breakdown: Organic, Paid, Social, Referral.
Example: 60% organic, 30% paid, 10% referral.

16. Inventory Turnover
Formula: COGS ÷ Average Inventory Value
Why track: Measures how quickly you sell stock.
17. Sell-Through Rate
Formula: Units Sold ÷ Units Available × 100
Example: 80 tees sold out of 100 stocked → 80% sell-through.
18. Order Fulfilment Time
What it is: Time from order placed to shipped.
Why track: Faster fulfilment = happier customers.
19. Net Promoter Score (NPS)
What it is: How likely customers are to recommend you.
Example: Ask: “On a scale of 0–10, how likely are you to recommend us?”
20. Return-to-Origin (RTO) Rate
Specific to COD: % of orders returned without delivery.
Why track: High RTO = wasted shipping cost.
You don’t need to obsess over all 20 metrics daily. But pick your top 5–7 to monitor weekly, and review the rest monthly.
These numbers will tell you exactly where to double down and where to fix leaks before they sink your brand.
