100-Day Clothing Brand Building Course

Biggest nightmares in e-commerce: inventory management

Before We Begin

Most people start a clothing brand without understanding product creation, sourcing, marketing, pricing, and brand building. This 100-day course is built to help you understand the path before you start working on it.

This course is created from the real experience of building and scaling Offnorth Fashions into a multi-crore clothing brand over the last 6+ years.

When you run your store on Shopify, you automatically get access to a built-in inventory management system.

And honestly, for most startup brands, this is more than enough. You can track stock levels, get alerts when products are running low, and automatically mark products as “out of stock” when they sell out.

It’s simple, clean, and it works without you needing to pay for another fancy tool. So, when do you need something beyond Shopify? The answer is not when you’re just starting.

You’ll only need a dedicated inventory tool once you start scaling and things get complex.

For example, if you’re selling on multiple channels like Amazon, Myntra, Flipkart, your own website, and even offline stores, now you need one central system that syncs all inventory in real time so you don’t oversell or undersell.

That’s when tools like Zoho Inventory, Unicommerce, Cin7, or TradeGecko (now QuickBooks Commerce) come into play.

But in the early stages, adding more software than necessary can slow you down instead of helping.

Shopify’s own system lets you manage everything in one place, generate basic reports, and set reorder points so you don’t get caught in the “oops, we’re out of stock” situation. For most t-shirt brands in their first couple of years, this is more than enough.

And here’s the thing – inventory management isn’t just about knowing how many products you have. It’s about having the right products at the right time.

Too much stock means your money is stuck in inventory. Too little stock means you lose sales. A good system, whether Shopify or a third-party tool, helps you find that balance.

And if you want to be smart about it, start tracking a few key numbers right now. You can track a few things like ‘Inventory Turnover Ratio’, ‘sell-through rate’, and ‘Days of inventory on hand’.

What are they?

The inventory turnover ratio tells you how quickly your stock is selling and being replenished.

The sell-through rate shows the percentage of inventory sold within a period, which tells you which products move fast and which ones are just eating shelf space.

Days of inventory on hand help you estimate how long your current stock will last. Even something simple like tracking your slow-moving stock every month can help you make better purchase decisions.

Get these right early, and you’ll never have to panic about being overstocked or understocked again.
