100-Day Clothing Brand Building Course

Finding Your T-Shirt Brand Niche

Before We Begin

Most people start a clothing brand without understanding product creation, sourcing, marketing, pricing, and brand building. This 100-day course is built to help you understand the path before you start working on it.

This course is created from the real experience of building and scaling Offnorth Fashions into a multi-crore clothing brand over the last 6+ years.

We are now in the right mindset towards achieving the ₹1 crore a year revenue for our t-shirts brand.

Now, let's discuss the real marketing part.

Shall we begin?

Yes.

Shall we start with Google Ads?

Or Facebook Ads?

Ahh!

No. We should not do this.

Honestly, this is the area where I see a lot of brands make mistakes.

They straightaway create the t-shirts first based on their interest and then give the marketing part to an external Google Ads and Meta Ads marketing agency.

They try for 3-4 months. No sales. Lose hope. Give up.

That's the reason why more than 70% of the clothing brands fail within 2 years of business.

Not planning the right way.

Okay, but what is the right way?

We need to first do the groundwork. Creating the niche and a customer avatar.

This is the very first step we need to take.

Let's focus on the first thing today.

What is a niche?

A niche is a specific segment of a larger market that you choose to focus on. Instead of trying to sell your product to everyone, you pick a smaller, well-defined group of people with common interests, problems, or needs, and tailor your products and marketing to them.

In the context of a T-shirt brand, a niche could be fitness enthusiasts, pet lovers, entrepreneurs & founders, gamers, minimalist fashion lovers, spiritual or yoga community, anime fans, regional pride (like Tamil culture or South Indian pride).

When you focus on a specific niche, it may typically look like you are losing out on a larger market. But, when you dig deeper into business building, you will find out that the riches are in the niches.

Well, this is controversial.

Some say, riches are in the niches, but some say riches are in the masses.

I do not want to fight over this now, but what I can say for sure is, every successful business started in a specific niche and expanded over time.

Amazon started as an online bookstore, Facebook started as a Social Network for Harvard Students, Netflix – Started as a DVD Rental by Mail and Tesla – started with High-End Electric Sports Car (Tesla Roadster).

When you try to catch everything, you will catch nothing.

So, start with a single niche.

Okay. But, how to find this niche?

Good question.

You have the answer.

It should come from you. Who you are or whom do you understand deeper is the answer.

If you are someone who is a movie buff, it is your niche. If you design the products for yourself, you are designing products for all the movie buffs out there.

And marketing will also be super easy. You know where you hang out. When you shout out there, you will get good sales.

And when people relate to you, they will buy what you sell.

A common example for this is FullyFilmy in Tamil Nadu, which focuses on movie t-shirts. They talk about movies everywhere. They review movies and decode the best films, and explain to viewers. I am a big fan of their work. I love films so I ended up purchasing their tees.

If you make general t-shirts for everyone, you can't shout out specific names.

Imagine, in a crowd, someone says "Please raise a hand." Who will raise their hand? Almost no one. But, if you say, "Ashish please raise your hand," all the Ashishs in the group will raise their hands. That is what niching down marketing means.

So, think about what you're really passionate about. Or what topic can you talk about for hours without noticing time passing by.

Once you are clear with this, you can find a niche. Once you find a niche, almost 40% of the work is done, trust me.

So, take time, do homework. Think about what niche you can focus on.
