Most common beginner questions from new brand owners
Most people start a clothing brand without understanding product creation, sourcing, marketing, pricing, and brand building. This 100-day course is built to help you understand the path before you start working on it.
This course is created from the real experience of building and scaling Offnorth Fashions into a multi-crore clothing brand over the last 6+ years.
One of the most common beginner questions I hear from new brand owners is, “What if two customers order the last piece of a product at the same time?”
It sounds like a small thing, but it comes up often – especially during sales or when you have low stock.
For example, imagine you have only one Large Black Polo left. Two customers add it to their carts within seconds of each other. Here’s exactly how Shopify handles it.
Shopify doesn’t “reserve” an item just because someone added it to the cart.
Stock is only reduced once the payment is completed.
So, in our example, the customer whose payment finishes first gets the T-shirt.
The second customer will either see an “out of stock” message during checkout or, in rare timing overlaps, they might complete payment and then get refunded if Shopify detects the stock is gone.
This system works well in most cases, but in high-demand moments (like product launches or festival sales), it can create disappointment for the second buyer.
That’s why some brands keep a very small safety stock – not to remove it from online, but to quickly fulfil accidental oversells without delaying shipping.
If you don’t have backup stock, then the only option is to issue a prompt refund with a clear, polite explanation.
So, in short, Shopify gives the product to whoever whose payment is confirmed first.
There’s no perfect way to “lock” an item for someone just because it’s in their cart, but clear communication and fast refunds keep customers happy when this rare case happens.
