Packaging is your silent salesman. But is it worth the cost?
Most people start a clothing brand without understanding product creation, sourcing, marketing, pricing, and brand building. This 100-day course is built to help you understand the path before you start working on it.
This course is created from the real experience of building and scaling Offnorth Fashions into a multi-crore clothing brand over the last 6+ years.
Can you sell both premium and low-ticket products under one brand?
Let’s zoom in on a quieter but super powerful piece of your brand:
Packaging.
Now here’s the big question every founder faces:
“How do I make my packaging feel premium without blowing up my cost per order?”
You’ve probably thought about it:
-
A rigid drawer-style box with foil print
-
A custom tissue wrap with your logo
-
Thank-you cards
-
Fancy swing tags
-
Stickers, badges, fragrance paper
-
Maybe even a pouch or a mini freebie
And all of this adds to one thing: the delivery experience.
Because, as an online store, the truth is your packaging is your first physical handshake with the customer. The moment they open the courier, the product hasn’t spoken yet. But your packaging has.
And just like a good handshake, it sets the tone.
Now here’s the but: All of that adds to your cost.
And you need to add that cost with the selling price, thus raising your selling price.
And that might slow your sales. But if you don’t do any of this, you lose the premium feeling.
So… what do we do?
Here’s what I’ve learned working with 1000+ brands: Packaging is not about being expensive. It’s about being thoughtful.
Let me break it down.
If your T-shirt costs you ₹400, adding a ₹100 rigid box, ₹20 sticker, ₹15 thank-you card, and ₹10 swing tag takes you to ₹545 before shipping. Now add ₹60 for delivery. You’re at ₹605 landed cost.
And most founders forget volumetric weight. That fancy rigid box? It increases parcel size.
So even if your tee weighs 510 grams, the box may push your courier charge to a 1kg rate (more on this a little later).
Now your ₹60 shipping becomes ₹100+.
Multiplied across 1000 orders = ₹40,000+ gone just on air and space.
So here’s the smarter way:
Create packaging windows.
Think of it like levels.
-
Window 1 – Minimalist Core: Biodegradable courier bag + branded thank-you card inside + QR code for care instructions. Cost: ₹15–₹20.
-
Window 2 – Branded Feel: Add a swing tag, sticker seal, and branded tissue paper or zip pouch. Cost: ₹15–₹25.
-
Window 3 – Premium Unboxing: Use a rigid box or drawer box + magnetic lid + foil logo + custom note. Cost: ₹60–₹100.
Now, you assign the right packaging window per product.
-
Selling a ₹899 cotton tee? Go with Window 1 or 2.
-
Selling a ₹3999 Supima Polo? Use Windows 2 or 3.
-
Running a gifting campaign or Diwali drop? Go all in with Window 3.
This way, your brand feels premium where it matters, and lean where it doesn’t.
Also – keep this in mind:
“You can charge more if you look like you’re worth it.”
Your ₹999 tee can feel like ₹1,999 with the right storytelling and packaging experience.
Your ₹3,999 tee can feel like ₹999 if it arrives in a crumpled polybag.
Packaging creates perceived value. It makes people feel like they’ve bought something special.
It increases the chance of them sharing it on Instagram. It makes them gift, talk about it, and remember it. And yet, don’t go overboard.
Here’s my rule of thumb:
“If your packaging eats more than 10–12% of your total product cost, rethink it.”
One last tip?
Never print inventory-heavy packaging early on. Use stickers or sleeves to brand your boxes.
This lets you change your logo, messaging, or SKUs without throwing out 200 unused cartons.
So next time you think:
“Should I invest more in packaging?”
Ask yourself:
Will it increase perceived value?
Will it help me charge more — or increase retention?
Will it break my profit structure?
Find your sweet spot. Remember, packaging isn’t your product. But it’s the stage your product performs on.
Design it wisely.
