100-Day Clothing Brand Building Course

Should I stick to Tier 1 cities or go into Tier 2/3?

Before We Begin

Most people start a clothing brand without understanding product creation, sourcing, marketing, pricing, and brand building. This 100-day course is built to help you understand the path before you start working on it.

This course is created from the real experience of building and scaling Offnorth Fashions into a multi-crore clothing brand over the last 6+ years.

When you’re building a brand, especially an online-first one, this question will hit you sooner or later!

Do I just keep focusing on Tier 1 cities where people have higher spending power, or should I start pushing into Tier 2 and Tier 3 markets?

Let’s unpack this like we’re having coffee together.

Tier 1 cities like your Mumbais, Delhis, Bangalores – are like the “low-hanging fruit” in terms of disposable income, awareness, and access to logistics.

Customers here are already used to online shopping, know what premium means, and won’t hesitate to pay extra for faster delivery or better quality.

The flip side? Competition is brutal. Your ads here are going head-to-head with every big brand that has crores to burn. Cost per click? High. Conversion rates? Decent, but only if you nail your targeting and offer.

Now, Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities like the Amrits, Maduraiurais, and Indore are where things get interesting.

The audience is growing fast, their trust in online shopping is increasing, and logistics have improved massively in the last 5–7 years.

Plus, your ad spends here can stretch further. But there’s still hesitation in buying high-ticket products without building trust first. COD demand will be higher, returns might be slightly more, and you’ll need stronger communication to break the “Will this be worth my money?” barrier.

So, which should you choose?

My honest take? Don’t think of it as either-or. Think of it as a sequence.

Start with Tier 1 to build your credibility, reviews, and cash flow. Once you’ve got a solid foundation, use those profits to test Tier 2/3 campaigns. But, and this is a big one, customize your approach.

Your ad creative, offers, and even your product descriptions might need to speak differently to these audiences.

And here’s the kicker: some of the fastest-growing D2C brands in India have cracked Tier 2/3 markets without abandoning Tier 1.

They built a brand image in metros, then scaled revenue in smaller cities where acquisition costs were lower. It’s not about picking one road. It’s about knowing which road to start on and when to take the turn.
